About
This work shows the influence of American colour field painters whose work Alberto Garcia-Alvarez encountered in the United States during the 1960s. In much colour field work the effect of brushstrokes on the canvas was minimised to focus attention on the colour relationships. 'Untitled (red/orange)' however bears the traces of the artist's vigorous application of paint. Garcia-Alvarez came to New Zealand in 1973 as a visiting lecturer at Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland. He later became senior lecturer in printmaking there.
