Don Driver Artist's Statment 5 March 2010:

There are twenty works in this series begun in 1971 and covering a period of approximately four years. I made them in a variety of sizes although the dimensions of this particular work are by far the most common. Each painting is a combination of canvas and sometimes metal panels fitted against one another, usually horizontally in physically different planes.

In the autumn of 1972 I made numbers 11 & 12 concurrently and when I decided to enter that year's Benson and Hedges competition I found it difficult to choose between them. In the event I sent No. 11 (where a central blue shiny strip traverses two shades of matt yellow at the top with a raised green canvas dropping to a light burn't orange section at the bottom). This proved a happy choice, but I have sometimes wondered if No. 12 would equally have been a winner.
