The Govett-Brewster Foundation supports the future of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading and most courageous contemporary art museum. The Foundation is the avenue for donations, gifts and bequests to provide for the development of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery Collection and the realisation of major projects.
A FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE
Since opening in 1970, the Govett-Brewster has been a pathfinder, dedicated to generating artist projects, exhibitions, residencies, publications, events and discussion to stimulate encounter, challenge thinking and enrich the imagination. The Gallery’s focus on contemporary art from New Zealand, the Pacific and Asia is activated within a wider engagement with international art and culture. The Govett-Brewster is also home to the Collection and Archive of pioneer filmmaker and kinetic artist Len Lye (1901–1980), one of New Zealand’s most ingenious and influential modern artists.
INSPIRED BY MONICA
The life and spirit of the Govett-Brewster was determined by the vision of founding patron Monica Brewster (nee Govett). Monica Brewster envisaged a contemporary art museum of international standing that would offer a window to the world in the small coastal community of New Plymouth. She realised her dream through a generous gift in 1962 and a subsequent bequest to the city that established the Gallery, its policy and its Collection.
SUPPORTING CONTEMPORARY ART
To ensure that the Govett-Brewster sustains and enhances its position at the forefront of contemporary art and ideas, the Govett-Brewster Foundation invites you to make a difference through financial support. The Foundation’s six-tiered annual membership programme is designed for individuals and corporates with suggested donation levels, while personalised levels of giving are also welcome. The names of the levels are inspired by works in the Collection.
