Len Lye

LEN LYE'S WORK

Though best known internationally as a film-maker, Lye used many different forms of expression, including textiles, painting, drawing, static and kinetic sculpture.  He was also a writer of poetry, fanciful letters, stories and utopian theoretical texts dealing with the relationship between art, individuality, and happiness.

Lye painted, scratched, stencilled and even cut holes in film, composing motion and colour to extraordinary effect.

Lye's 'tangible motion sculptures' spin, wobble and shake, and now some of his most impressive ideas are being realised by the Len Lye Foundation.

Graphic Works
Drawing on many influences and a diverse range of South Pacific traditions, Lye's  graphic works included photograms and batiks as well as works on paper.

Texts by Len Lye
Lye's own writing included poetry, autobiography and essays in which he expounded his artistic theories.
