In honour of the centenary of Len Lye's birth in Christchurch in 1901, the Art Gallery of New South Wales has developed in partnership with the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery an exhibition of Lye's photograms, films and kinetic sculptures.
Curated by Judy Annear, Senior Curator of Photography at AGNSW, the thesis of the exhibition concentrates on Len Lye's representation of the life force through still and moving images, and through mechanical means. Rather than a full scale retrospective, this selection intends to expand upon specific aspects of the artist's work. Lye's overarching ideas to do with the 'total artwork' based on movement, light and emanation of the life force, which came into existence through his study of 'primitive' Oceanic art deserve to be better known.
Creative New Zealand is generously supporting the exhibition catalogue, to be published by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The catalogue will be 64pages, illustrating the photograms, the kinetic works and a selection of the films. It will feature essays by Judy Annear, Peter Shand and Hanna Scott.
