Immersive environments stimulate our senses in this international group exhibition that infiltrates unconventional spaces throughout the Gallery. Working individually and collaboratively in recent and specially commissioned projects, artists harness diverse materials to activate human sensory perception and create unique heterotopias of experience.
Participating artists have connections with Thailand, Germany, Italy, The Philippines, China, the UK, the US, Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Works include Brook Andrew’s large-scale inflatable installation The Cell 2010; a Breast Stupa Cookery performance and installation by Pinaree Sanpitak; an installation throughout Cafe Govett-Brewster by Sara Hughes; a collaboration by Francis Upritchard, furniture designer Martino Gamper and jeweller Karl Fritsch; a collaborative community project by artist partners Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan; a self-generating digital eco-system by Jon McCormack; an architectural intervention by John Ward Knox; a participatory olfactory installation by Tiffany Singh; a sound and video installation by duo Sonia Leber and David Chesworth; an ephemeral projection by Jennifer Wen Ma; alongside works from the Gallery’s Collection by artists Anton Parsons and Callum Morton.
The Cell is operational between 11.00am – 3.00pm.

Susan Frykberg and guest musicians provide a captivating afternoon of contemporary classical music for the last weekend of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery’s Stealing the Senses exhibition.
Inspired by the exhibition, Frykberg and guests respond with a sound composition throughout the Govett-Brewster’s gallery spaces entitled Hailing the Senses – Becoming Vibration.
