Detenebrate: to free from darkness or obscurity New Plymouth artist Jacqueline Elley works with light and muka, an organic, processed flax fibre traditionally produced in Taranaki, exploring the tensions between nature/culture, illumination/darkness and containment/fluidity in her work. For this site-specific installation, Elley references historical and contemporary Māori and Pakeha approaches to muka, transforming the Open Window gallery space into a lightbox. Elley graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art in 1999 and was awarded the painting prize that year. Curated by Meredith Robertshawe
