Len Lye's Trilogy returns
3 May 2003

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery presents Len Lye’s Trilogy - A flip and two twisters, the largest and most dynamic of Lye’s tangible motion sculptures housed at the Gallery, home of the Len Lye Foundation.

Lye, one of New Zealand’s most celebrated artists, has developed an international reputation based on his innovative practice in film, painting and kinetic sculpture.

“Lye focused much of his artistic energies on exploring the relationship between motion and sound, he even stated that ‘movement [was] strictly the language of life’,” said Gallery Director Greg Burke.

Trilogy, a favourite with audiences, is a large and dramatic work that dances, shimmers and constantly astounds viewers with its wild crashing of metal.

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery commissioned Trilogy in 1977 with funding from the Monica Brewster Bequest and the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council. The sculpture was manufactured by Fitzroy Engineering under the direction of John Matthews and motorised by Corcoran Brothers, New Plymouth.

Trilogy – A flip and two twisters runs 3 May to 13 July 2003
