The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is pleased to present Pathfinders an exhibition featuring a selection of works from the Gallery Collection by artists with past connections to New Plymouth Boys High School.
Coinciding with the school’s 125th Jubilee, the exhibition features works by Don Driver, Paul Hartigan, Tom Kreisler, Darcy Lange, Michael Smither and Terry Urbahn.
Gallery Director Rhana Devenport says the exhibition showcases the exceptional array of talent to emerge out of the region.
“These are all significant New Zealand artists represented in our collection who have a special relationship with New Plymouth and the Gallery, “ she says.
Don Driver, Paul Hartigan, Darcy Lange, Michael Smither and Terry Urbahn were all students at New Plymouth Boys High School. Tom Kreisler, whose work is the subject of a major survey exhibition currently on show at the Govett-Brewster, taught at the school in late 1960s and 1970s. Both Paul Hartigan and Terry Urbahn were pupils of Tom Kreisler.
The artists in Pathfinders work with diverse media including painting, sculpture, video, installation and neon.
The exhibition evokes consideration of how each artist contributes to the notion of being a pathfinder. This is considered in relation to the artists’ own life journeys as they explore various mediums, styles and ideas.
The exhibition also alludes to the Gallery’s role as a pathfinder and a beacon, an idea particularly evoked by the Paul Hartigan work Pathfinder (1997) which features in permanence on the Gallery façade.
Pathfinders is on at the Govett-Brewster from 31 March – 9 April. Also showing until 13 May is the exhibition Tom Kreisler.
